ElectionDoes your New Year's Resolution include getting involved and making a difference? Election season is almost here, and any current undergraduate student is eligible to be a candidate.

Executive Elections take place from February 1st to 11th, but the timeline starts much sooner than that. Available positions in the February elections include:

  • President
  • Vice President University Affairs
  • Vice President Finance and Administration
  • Vice President Student Services
  • Board of Directors (3 available)

Nomination packages are available beginning Monday January 11th from the BUSU Office, and any candidate for office is required to gather 100 signatures of support from your fellow students. This package is due on Friday January 22nd, with an all-candidates meeting held on the evening of the 22nd.

2 Referendums will also be held in February. One will ask for the removal of the Alumni Centre Renovations Fee, replacing it with a Clubs Fee, Green Fee, and increase to the BUSU Fee. The second question will seek funding for the creation of a Student Justice Centre. Students are invited to get involved with the 'Yes' or 'No' sides of each referendum.

More information about the positions available, and the referendum questions, are available at the Candidate's Cafe Information Session to be held on Wednesday January 13th at 1:00pm in the Skybar Lounge. Bring your pens, paper, and questions. More information can be obtained by e-mailing the Chief Returning Officer, John Maduk, at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Now that it's 2010, nominations are also open for municipal government positions. Election Day is October 25, 2010, however don't let this late date fool you. Candidates for municipal positions, including Mayor, Councillor, Regional Councillor, or School Board Trustee, may not raise money or create election materials until they are a nominated candidate, and many people declare their intentions early to gain support and donations, as well as media attention. The only qualifications for election are that you (or your spouse) live in, rent, or own property in the municipality where you seek to run, and that you are a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age. If you are interested in running for municipal government, contact the Clerk at the municipality of your residence, or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
