O-Week 2007 “The Next Frontier” puts the labour back in Labour Day

As Labour Day arrived, so did the vans, trucks and SUV’s. Brock University residences were soon filled with TVs, computers, fridges, Kraft Dinner and students. The Brock University Students’ Union was ready. BUSU got to display their months of planning and attention to detail in the name of welcoming new and returning students. BUSU’s O-Week 2007 “The Next Frontier” kicked off with BUSU volunteers, staff and Brock University varsity athletes storming residences to help move students into their new home-away from-home.
James O’Brien, BUSU President, commented on the day: “Residence Move-In day was a great opportunity for all aspects of the Brock community to come together and welcome new and returning students. We were overwhelmed by the positive response that parents gave us as we took care of all the heavy lifting and moving. Everyone worked as a team and it was great to see the Men’s Hockey Team out in large numbers. Our Student Welcoming Awareness Team (S.W.A.T.) contributed the largest contingent of volunteers but without help from the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams this day would not have been as successful.”
Once the lifting and unpacking was done, the BUSU Executive and staff welcomed another group of students back to Brock. A barbeque was hosted for the Brock Off-Campus society on Isaac’s patio. The barbeque was very well attended by BOC members.
Later that night, it was time for students and BUSU to let loose and showcase their dance moves at the Tower Party. When the event was planned, the estimated attendance was to be about 800-1000 students; nearly 1,800 students passed through the doors.
“This event was a great gauge to see if students had BUSU events on their radar; obviously they do and it was a great way to kick-off the events aspect of O-Week 2007” O’Brien commented. “We had a great turnout of S.W.A.T. and office staff to ensure that the event went off without a hitch. In addition we could not have had such a successful event without the efforts of the Isaac’s security staff.”
