O-Week “The Next Frontier” does swag and clubs

By Blake Faulds Published on: Friday September 21st, 2007

For 3 days Brock’s Jubilee Court was transformed from a picnic area to an outdoor shopping mall and club fair. Vendors from all over the Niagara Region and Ontario descended on Brock’s campus to give students a chance to sign up for internet, cable, phone, bank, recreation and professional services. Brock Radio was in attendance with a sound stage providing music for the 3 days of events. Other Brock services were in attendance to give students an idea of what Brock University has to offer.

This was also the first time for BUSU to get to work engaging a large number of students and ensuring that students had their universal bus pass stickers, locker rentals, day planners, wall calendars and of course tons of free swag. President James O’Brien commented on the students’ attendance and patience at some of the tents, “I have to hand it to the students, it was hot out there, I mean really hot and they waited patiently in line for bus pass stickers. We tried to keep them entertained with handing out free swag, water and running ‘get to the front of the line’ contests. It was great to see the number of students who actually took the time to engage us as well; we love it when students come to us with information and feedback.”

On the third day in Jubilee Court, vendors packed up shop and Brock’s many clubs took centre stage. Approximately 55 clubs attended the club fair all with the hopes of informing Brock students of what they offer and how they could get involved.

“It’s amazing to see how many different types of clubs there are on campus. You see a list and think ‘wow that’s a lot of clubs’ but to actually see them out and see what they are about is completely a testament that the Brock student population is diverse and very well representative as a whole” Laura Grouchy, Vice President Students Services, stated when ask about the different clubs.

“What’s even more impressive is that we have political clubs, religious clubs, recreational clubs, cultural clubs, clubs based on academics, based on personal interests, based on lifestyle choices, based on sexual orientation, and clubs based on often very conflicting views, yet there is no animosity, no tensions and no conflicts when they all come together in a common place. That is the most refreshing aspect of the club fair.”
