O-Week “The Next Frontier” shines some light on Cystic-Fibrosis

By Blake Faulds Published on: Friday September 21st, 2007

On the morning of September 8th, hundreds of volunteers swarmed Isaac’s Bar and Grill to fuel up on pancakes and scrambled eggs. They would need it, as an hour later they would be taking St. Catharines and the Niagara Region by storm. Around 9:30am well over a hundred BUSU volunteers and staff set out to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis foundation on the annual Shinerama Shine Day.

This army of “shiners” set out to locations such as Discount Car Rental and No Frills on Lake St, the 4th Avenue Smart Centres, the Downtown Student Residence, Thorold’s Foodland, and many more. There was also a site at Kelsey’s Restaurant at the Pen Centre, which was the site for the highest level of donations received. Car washes, shoe shining, window cleaning and barbeques were all methods of fundraising used at these locations.

Throughout the summer the Shinerama team had been working towards the goal of raising $15,000.

When asked about the how the fundraising went, President James O’Brien was delighted to say “we were shooting for $15,000 this year, I am happy to say that we raised over $16,000. I am also proud to say that on Shine Day alone we raised more than $10,000. That truly shows that the time and effort put in by the coordinators, the volunteers and the BUSU Executive has paid off and we have done our part in helping such a worthy cause, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.”

It was important to note that the 2007 Shinerama campaign garnered the most sites ever held on Shine Day and had the help of the most volunteers ever for this single day blitz.

Once all the sites closed up shop after the productive day raising the profile of Cystic Fibrosis, the volunteers and helping hands were treated to a free private concert back at Isaac’s featuring Mobile as the headlining act. “It was great to be able to offer such a great band to the volunteers after a hard day and well earned relax time. Without them this program and this day would not have been possible” O’Brien concluded.
