Brock University Students’ Union to host Federal Election Debates
Published on: Wednesday September 24th, 2008
The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) will be hosting two debates for local candidates in the federal election. Both will be open to students, staff, media, and members of the general public. “It is important for everyone, especially first-time voters, to make an informed decision before casting their ballot on voting day,” said Jody Thomas, BUSU President. “Debates give our students the chance to hear directly from their candidates and future representatives.”
The debate for the Welland riding will be held on Monday September 29th, from 1:00 to 3:00pm in AS 217 (Academic South building). The debate for the St. Catharines riding will be held on Friday October 3rd, also from 1:00 to 3:00pm in AS 217. Both debates will follow the following format:
- Welcome and introductions from the moderator
- Two minute opening remarks from each candidate
- Two education-related questions from the Students’ Union
- One hour of screened questions from the floor. Questions must be directed to all candidates
- Two minute closing remarks from each candidate.
- Closing remarks and voting day reminders from the moderator
No rebuttals will be allowed during opening or closing remarks. During the question portion, candidates will have 90 seconds to answer each question. The first candidate to answer the question may opt for a 60-second rebuttal after all others have spoken. No further rebuttals will be allowed.
