"Shinerama is an extraordinary example of what can happen when youth, energy and friendship come together for a good cause. Since attending the National Shinerama Leadership Conference back in May, this charity has become my most recently found passion and myself along with my other colleagues are committed to this cause. We are ready to pass on the SHINE LOVE and make this year a year to remember! Help Brock University bring back the Breath of Life!"
- Here at Brock University Students’ Union we challenge the students of Brock to continue their efforts in the total amount raised in our Shinerama campaign! Brock's Shinerama campaign has the potential to be the biggest ever, but only with the participation and enthusiasm of ALL Brock students! Last year the Shinerama team along with a generous student body raised over $33,000. This amount exceeded the 2009 goal but we wish to inspire the student body to help the nation reach the $1 million mark for 2010. Continuing the TraditionThis year Brock students have accepted the challenge of raising money and awareness and are commited to giving it their all so that one day CF will equal CURE FOUND! . First a little history behind Shinerama. Shinerama is Canada's largest post-secondary fundrasier involving students over 60 university and college campuses across Canada. While Shinerama began in 1964 as a shoe-shining campaign during Orientation week, it has since grown to include a wide variety of shining and non-shining activities unthe the Shinerama banner. In previous years, Brock was able to have over 400 volunteers participating on Shine Day, joining over 35,000 students nationwide. Together, students shined shoes, washed cars, co-ordinated raffles and barbeques, as well as numerous other events over St Catharines, Thorold and Niagara Falls in support of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and their goal to help find a cure for this deadly disease.
Why We Get InvolvedCystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal, inherited disease of young Canadians, mainly affecting the lungs and digestive system. In Canada, one in 25 Canadians carries a defective version of the gene and one in 3,600 babies in this country has CF. Since Shinerama began, the median age of survival for people with CF had risen from three years of age to 37 years of age. However, it remains fatal in all cases. since being reinstated in 2004, Brock's Shine efforts have increased significantly and we have been able to beat our commited goal in 2009, we were able to raise $33,819 to contribute to the national total of just under $1 Million. Since 2004 Brock University has contributed over $99,605.13 for the fight against cystic fibrosis. On Saturday, September 11th, we will once again be taking the streets of the Niagara Region to wash cars, shine shoes and do whatever else is necessary to raise funds to fight this debilitating disease. For 45 years, students have been planning a day in September so that individuals with cystic fibrosis could plan the rest of their lives... Help make this difference donate or volunteer today!
