Throughout the school year we provide a number of different volunteer opportunities for students at Brock. We organize S.W.A.T. (Student Welcoming Awareness Team) to help with September’s Orientation events such as move-in day, tower party, vendor fair, special events, and Shinerama. This year, BUSU was a part of the fundraising campaign for Spread the Net and the Violet Bloom Campaign that gave students the opportunity to volunteer for a great cause, raise awareness, make a difference, and pass on the knowledge to other Brock students.

In addition to providing opportunities for events and charity organizations, BUSU also provides career building opportunities to students by being a part of Brock First Aid Responders, Foot Patrol, BUSAC (Brock University Students’ Union Administrative Council), etc. Throughout the year BUSU volunteers take their time to help other students, organizations/causes, and the St. Catharines community to set an excellent example of “Brock Spirit”.

Your volunteer hours will be tracked through the Experience PLUS program, which provides you with a transcript of all of your non-academic involvement at Brock. Volunteering with BUSU will be a great addition to your resume and portfolio especially when you are applying for scholarships or awards, jobs, internships, teacher’s college, graduate studies, etc.

Reasons to Volunteer

There are many reasons to get involved and volunteer. These can include: to make a contribution to the community, to use one’s skills and experiences, and being affected by the cause supported by the organization. Students who are satisfied with their volunteer activities report greater satisfaction with their academic work, their physical health, and life in general. They have a greater sense of meaning and purpose in life.

Volunteering is satisfying for university students in particular because:
  • You learn new skills that can be used in the work force
  • You make new friends and become more familiar with your surroundings
  • You feel “passionately engaged”
The majority of volunteers say that their volunteer activities helped them with their interpersonal skills, such as understanding people better, motivating others and dealing with difficult situations. The percentage of volunteers who reported gaining specific skills as a result of volunteering increases steadily with the number of hours they contribute.
