Representing You

BUSU’s mandate stretches beyond the businesses and services that we directly control. We are also here to influence decision-makers on your behalf. Whether they are in government, within the University, private industry or not-for-profits, there are many organizations that can affect your life as a student. BUSU actively lobbies for effective change that will benefit your life and your student experience.

There are a number of ways that you should expect BUSU to lobby on your behalf. Working towards lower tuition is an obvious one, so is asking for more grants, and higher OSAP limits. But there are a number of other issues we keep our eyes on that you might not expect. These include:

  • Transit service, frequencies and prices across Niagara
  • Inter-city transit to get you to and from the Niagara Region
  • Rental and property standards and bylaws
  • Public nuisance ordinances
  • Taxi regulations
  • Alcohol and gaming licensing
  • Textbook pricing and quality
  • Book importation regulations
  • Copyright laws
  • Debt repayment and interest relief programs
  • Interest rates
  • Bankruptcy legislation
  • Research funding and granting agencies
  • Welfare and employment insurance standards
  • Childcare and early childhood education
  • Voting and election regulations
  • Teaching quality
  • Marking and grading regulations
  • Student representation on and off campus
  • Space needs on campus
  • Labour situations and disputes on campus
  • and many, many, many more

If it affects your student experience, quality of life as a student, or anything else related to academics, education, or your experience transitioning to or from university, BUSU is here to work for you. We meet with politicians and decision-makers, send submissions and inquiries to committees, and work with partners on your behalf. We work locally in collaboration with the Niagara College Students Administrative Council (NCSAC), provincially with the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA), and federally with the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) to strengthen our voice and message to the necessary bodies.
