The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) is pleased to hear that the Brock University Administration has accepted BUSU’s recommendation and offered CUPE 4207 binding arbitration as a means to avoid a strike at Brock University. This news comes after BUSU released its second Strike Update Memo to students and local media where it stated “BUSU is now encouraging both sides to consider the option of binding arbitration.”

This news was released early on March 3rd from the University in an official release found at http://www.brocku.ca/collectivebargaining. An excerpt from the Brock release states: “the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) has encouraged both parties to submit all outstanding issues to binding arbitration. While there is uncertainty associated with binding arbitration, the University is prepared to accept BUSU’s recommendation in order to reach a fair conclusion to these negotiations and to avoid an interruption to the academic term.”

BUSU has ramped up its Facebook (facebook.com/BrockBUSU), Twitter (@BrockBUSU & #NoStrike), web (www.busu.net/studentsfirst), and e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) information campaigns to students at Brock University. BUSU is also adding daily updates to its FAQ section of http://www.busu.net/studentsfirst as news becomes available.

BUSU will continue to go to the students in the halls to answer questions and field concerns. BUSU continues to help spread the message and to urge CUPE 4207 to accept the University’s offer and enter into binding arbitration in order to prevent a strike that BUSU maintains “should not and cannot be an option,” according to BUSU President and spokesperson, Sohail Ahmed.

  1. Who does CUPE 4207 consist of?

CUPE 4207 represents part-time instructors, teaching assistants, lab demonstrators, course co-ordinators, marker-graders, and full-time ESL coordinators at Brock University.

  2. What is BUSU doing for the students to avoid a strike?

BUSU is encouraging both sides to come to an agreement and advocating that a strike is not an option.

  3. If a strike occurs will classes be cancelled?

While the University does have a contingency plan to address issues of this nature, there are some departments that may be more deeply affected by the strike because they rely heavily on seminars and labs. It is our belief that there are professors who will not cross the picket lines, and it could get quite confusing to cancel only a select number of classes. There is potential for all classes to be cancelled, but the university has stated it is committed to completing the term as scheduled and will communicate any changes to students as they arise.

  4. I am graduating this year, how will the strike affect me?

Spring convocation is scheduled to be held June 7-11th this year. The university will communicate any changes if required.

  5. Spring convocation is scheduled to be held June 7-11th this year. The university will communicate any changes if required.

    • There are no plans to close Residences and Food Services on campus.
    • Recreation Services will remain open and inform students of any changes made to class schedules and normal operating hours.
    • Student Health Services will continue to operate regular hours. Fees would not be charged for late or missed appointments during a labour disruption. You are advised to please call Student Health Services to notify staff if you will be unable to make your appointment.

  6. In the event of a strike would picket lines be on campus?

You should expect picket lines at entry points to the Brock campus. Therefore anticipate delays while entering or leaving campus, and give yourself extra time when planning your schedule. Carpooling and taking public transit are viable options to reduce delays.

  7. If I am a co-op student on a work term how will the strike affect me?

Your work term will continue as scheduled.

  8. If a strike occurs how will it affect my transcripts?

Transcripts with grades up to, and including, Fall term grades are available now. Transcripts with current term course grades will be available as soon as all grades from the term have been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, this is normally late May. At this time, no delay in release of transcripts with final grades is anticipated. However, the Registrar will notify universities and colleges in Canada should a delay be anticipated. In addition, under those circumstances, a letter from the Office of the Registrar explaining any delay in processing due to the strike will be made available to students upon request.

  9. Will parking still be available during the strike?

Yes, parking will still be available but plan for delays entering and exiting the campus.

  10. Will there be any changes to public transit services?

Transit operations will continue as usual. Changes may be made to drop off locations near the campus to avoid crossing picket lines.
