The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) welcomes you to the 2nd Annual Wellness Week. Wellness Week 2014 is a weeklong initiative put on by BUSU and other Brock University departments. Wellness Week focuses on the overall health of students and community members through events, advocacy and student engagement. BUSU has continued with the 5 original pillars as well adding an additional 6th pillar this year. They include: Mental Wellness, Physical Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Spiritual Wellness, Lifestyle Wellness & Financial Wellness.

These pillars are integral to a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle during your journey at Brock. For more information on each pillar, please click the links above to see which events are being offered by BUSU and many other campus partners committed to health and wellness.   • Mental Wellness

    The prevalence of Mental Health issues in post-secondary institutions is well documented. We have all heard the statistic that 1 in 5 students in Canada are now dealing with some form of Mental Health challenge. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, depression or any other strain on your ability to be mentally well… It is important to ask questions, seek help, and know the warning signs so you are able to spot some Mental Health challenges that other students may be facing.

  • Physical Wellness

    The old adage, “a healthy body makes a healthy mind” is TRUE! In order to study well, you have to be sure that you are exercising at least an hour a day and eating well! This means a healthy diet, plenty of exercise AND a well-balanced diet. There are a TONNE of accessible and fun fitness programs on campus and ALL are open and no-additional charge to students!

  • Emotional Wellness

    Emotional Wellness is not limited to how you’re feeling at this moment and time; happy, sad, mad, scared… Emotional Wellness also speaks to your support systems, relationships, family life, motivation and a number of other factors that play a huge in determining your success here at Brock. It is important to remember that although you may be in school and taking hours out of your day to cram in the library – it is equally important get out and meet new people, build new relationships and value old ones. There is a place for everyone on this campus!

  • Spiritual Wellness

    It is important to note that although religion plays a huge role in spirituality, it is not the only mechanism of channeling your inner self. There are many ways to get in touch with your spirituality. Whether you are supporting a faith, exploring new faiths, getting in touch with your roots or joining us for a morning meditation lesson… spirituality is something that many students turn to for guidance, support and emission.

  • Lifestyle Wellness

    Last but not least, it is important to encompass a healthy lifestyle into your holistic wellness. Albeit a more ambiguous concept, Lifestyle Wellness is equally important. Lifestyle Wellness includes everything from your daily routine, to how you cope with stress, to how clean your room is. It is impossible to be organized, healthy and successful if you are not acting as a mature adult at home! This means respecting yourself, your roommates, your neighbors and your body!

Jennifer is a dietician in the community. She will talk about healthy eating especially during exams.

Dr. Warsi, our psychiatrist & Debbie MacCulloch our mental health nurse, will discuss their role with student health services. They will speak about mental health and answer questions about when to get help, the process and the resources available on and off campus.



Ryan will discuss his motivation and drive that leads him in his passion.

About Ryan: Ever since my father and i cycled across Canada at age 13, it has been a dream to turn my passion for two wheels into my purpose in life. That drive has lead me to the world’s most extreme cycling challenges, including Ironman, the 4,418 km Tour Divide (the longest and toughest mountain bike race in the world), the 4,851 km Race Across America (considered the toughest sporting event in the world by Outside magazine), a 25,000 km tour down the Pan American Highway (the longest road in the world, stretching from Alaska to Argentina), and nearly cripple myself on an 7-day stationary cycling world record attempt. The list goes on!

This meeting will give students an opportunity to meet one of the counseling staff and learn about what the process and goals are for counselling students at Brock University. Students will be encouraged to interact with the counselor and further their understanding of the counseling process.

Each (2) 30-minute session helps students plan out their thesis and develop their argument effectively in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of their essay writing skills!
